Shifting the Victim: The Politics of Selective Outrage

Over this past year, one of if not the main focus points from liberals has been the notion that immigrants are victims of ICE. A significant rise in opposition has been spread through the media, protests, and Democrat politicians and leaders discussing concern over immigrants being at the victims of ICE. But if you look into past Democrat shared values in their party, you find contradictions with previous beliefs that were held firmly by Obama and Democrats. You also find liberals handpicking “victims of the system”, but ignore other actual victims.

Take for example the immigration laws governed by President Obama. Speaking on behalf of the Democratic position, Obama, the leader of the Democrat party for 2 terms, unequivocally supported the position that immigrants coming to America “have to learn English”. Obama also supported that integration to America requires effort in adapting the civil culture, rejecting the idea that learning English and integrating to the civil culture was discriminatory. Obama even criticized the Bush administration for letting in 500,000 illegal immigrants under his administration, but didn’t critique the Biden Harris administration for letting in estimates of 10-12 million illegal immigrants. A party in the span of a decade, went from criticizing the Republican presidency letting 500,000 illegal immigrants crossing the border, to letting 10-12 million illegal immigrants cross through the border under Democrat leadership.

Moving forward into 2025, you would believe Obama is a republican if he said that today. With liberals today calling republicans racist, or at the very least discriminatory for the exact same belief Obama, and the democrat party had in recent years. Not only is this contradictory, it’s frightening. In the future, what other beliefs will the Democrat party radicalize? This question is ambiguous, and that’s why it’s so chilling. Will it be socialism? Even go as far as communism? Will it be that all republicans are the devil reincarnated? This last one is a bit sarcastic, but shockingly I think this last one is already happening, and if the democrat party stays consistent with the one thing they stay consistent on, that being radicalization, then all of these will certainly be making strides in the Democrat party in the upcoming years.

Illegal Immigrants are the new focus of victims of the system for the Liberal movement, but according to the Liberals even legal immigrants are now victims of the system. But does this claim have merit? In this past year, there have been miniscule amount of U.S citizens mistakenly being deported, these have been one-off instances based on mistakes, not actual policy. The total number of accidental deportations on U.S citizens is hard to find, estimates ranging around 5-15. According to the DHS, they have deported roughly 605,000 thousand illegal immigrants in 2024, without tracking self-deportation. Meaning out of 100,000 deportations, 1.65 U.S. citizens mistakenly get deported. The liberal position cannot possibly hold weight when the number of accidental U.S. deportations is astronomically low.

More so, it shows a concerning contradiction within the Liberal movement, that being handpicking “victims”, while ignoring the real ones. Looking at the state of Texas who tracks legal status for crimes like homicide, in 2020-2022, the homicide rate per 100,000 for illegal immigrants was 3.1. Comparing these numbers, the number of homicides rates per 100,000 is nearly double a U.S citizen being deported. You are more likely to be murdered by an illegal immigrant, than be deported as a U.S citizen. But you have yet to see liberals raise their voice for these victims, no protests, no riots, no anger at the system causing victims of murder than the victims of accidental mistakes that can be corrected.

Seeing these numbers raise the question, do liberals really care about victims? Or do they use “victims” for their political end? Liberals have shown an incredible amount of concern for immigrants, so much concern that we have had a plethora of protests, riots, and obstruction of ICE this past year. Take for example the protests that took place in California during the summer this year, notable incidents of bricks being thrown at police cars, buildings being set on fire, and destruction of law enforcement vehicles. Or all over the country obstruction of ICE when they are at work, this can be seen from Portland, Oregon to Minnesota where protesters stand directly in the path of ICE.

The progressive movement to stop ICE has been for the means of protecting immigrants, in reality it exaggerates victims for political gain, while ignoring the more severe crimes that effect victims on a greater level. This is seen with the murder rate being almost double than U.S citizens being deported, as well as the many child molesters, rapes, drugs, you can fill in the blank with the crime being committed by illegal immigrants. These crimes add up, and when considering these numbers on top of the murder statistic mentioned above, there is more quantity and severity in these crimes with an open border policy. When obstructing ICE, you protect these criminals to roam free, leaving their victims at mercy of the criminal who can’t be deported because of your intervention.

Now I don’t believe that these protesters’ intention is to save these evil criminals, rather I hold the view that liberals have been manipulated by Democrat politicians and leaders who have convinced millions of people a narrative that the data does not back up. From Tim Walz calling ICE “modern day Gestapo”, Gavin Newsom stating ICE is “state-sponsored terrorism”, or Ilhan Omar calling ICE to be abolished describing agents as “vile and beyond cruel”. These arguments are only believable based on emotion, not by numbers nor logic. When Liberals try to help victims of ICE, they only become a victim themselves to the democrat party, believing these lies only keeps corrupt politicians in power. Liberals are victims of the Democrat politicians and leaders who turn a blind eye to victims from their policies, who ignore the data because it copes out their narrative, and install real fear to try to turn their fake narrative into a believable one.
